The headlines don’t lie: The stage is ripe for eating disorders

Who can blame girls and women for obsessing over the shape of their bodies?  Just take a gander at three of the weight-related news stories from the past week that I’ve listed below.

Kate Beckinsale eats dessert (probably a poached pear…) This article by Popeater is an interview with Beckinsale who claims that she no longer starves herself. […]

Am I fat? Thin? Normal?

As I was indulging in this piece of drivel about the new 90210 starlets’ shrinking bodies, I was again struck by the realization that I have no idea what’s thin, what’s fat and what’s normal anymore.
I look in the mirror one day and say, “Okay, I look pretty healthy.”  The next day, I can barely […]

Ooops… the media did it again

I’m no Britney Spears fan.  No way, no how.  Just the thought of how she’s acted as a mom (or, rather, hasn’t acted) curdles my blood.
But I’m feeling a little sorry for the lass-of-few-undergarments today.
See, she swept the VMA awards last night.  (An event about which I was blissfully ignorant until today.)  And everyone loves her… […]

Deceiver calls out Victoria Beckham for the thinspiration she’s become

I admit it — I like Deceiver.com.  It’s a fun site to peruse when you’re determined to spend just another few minutes procrastinating.
Today, Deceiver’s uber bloggers are kvetching about Victoria Beckham.  She’s claiming that it hurts her to have people say she’s abusing (or using in any form) diet pills.
I’m not sure where to start with that one.
First […]

Et tu, Jennifer Love Hewitt?

I was so impressed when Jennifer Love Hewitt spat back at the nasty media last November/December.  They (namely TMZ and the tabloids) called her fanny flabby; she told them to buzz off because she wasn’t fat.  It was wonderful!  A Hollywood A-lister finally understood how we “ordinary” gals felt!  It was empowering.
That was then.
THIS is now.
Guess […]

Heroes wanted! (Miley Cyrus and Jamie Lynn Spears need not apply)

It’s tough being a ‘tween girl (approximately ages 8-12), that’s for sure.
I have the privilege of teaching plenty of them, and it’s clear to me that they need someone - a hero, if you will - to inspire them.
Unfortunately, today’s ‘tween gals have Miley, Jamie Lynn, and whoever else comes loping along with a bit […]

Eva Mendes is NOT fat ~ I don’t care what the fashion industry says!

Great article about Eva Mendes at Deceiver.com.
Geesh.  And we wonder why so many young girls are starving themselves by the time they reach double digits.

A new movie tackles anorexia and obesity

You’d think that with all the blogging I do on eating disorders PLUS the fact that I have over 25 years experience in the “legitimate” theatre that I’d know about upcoming movies.
But I don’t.
I’m just not enough of a cinema freak, I suppose.
Thank goodness for other bloggers to keep me updated!
In this case, Gabrielle, the […]
