Do women with eating disorders blame mom?

I’ve met many gals who suffer from disordered eating (if not a full-blown ED such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia.)  Many of them have terrible memories of their mothers.  Some even blame their moms.
I can understand.  I used to do that, too.  But looking back with the eyes of a mommy, I can see what […]

Are Wii Fit… or Fat?

Can a video game lead honestly trigger eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia?
Some people seem to think so, which flies in the face of typical criticisms of games generally aimed at keeping kids indoors for hours at a time.
Nintendo’s Wii Fit is the target of some unexpected controversy.
According to this news article from the […]

Moms & daughters — ana together?

As many of you know, I wrote a short story many years ago that I posted here at Breaking the Mirror.  The writing was pitiful (my apologies!), but the concept is one that still haunts me:
Are some mothers and daughters essentially “pro-ana” teams?
I’ve never personally known any mom-daughter relationships that fit this desciption, but I’ve […]

The caste system of eating disorders

If you’re not from the “world” of eating disorders, you might think that all disordered eaters treat one another the same.
Not so.
You see, like any other “clique”, those with EDs have a caste system, a heirarchy of sorts.  It’s not usually discussed, but it definitely exists.
Allow me to explain (and feel free to let me […]

Recovery from an eating disorder isn’t all about gaining weight

Many people (even those who should know better) honestly… and erroneously… believe that weight gain will almost instantly solve every issue associated with anorexia and bulimia.
Yeah, right.
As if a 10-pound weight gain would mean the end of a complicated relationship with Ana or Mia.
There are plenty of people in recovery who are still underweight and will remain so […]

Attention, naturally thin gals… do you feel pigeonholed by society?

I’ve never been a “naturally skinny” person.  Even as a child, I was… well… healthy-looking.  I never was told I was scrawny.  So I often forget that being naturally lean carries with it its own sort of stigma.
My question tonight is aimed at all the ladies out there who are or once were extremely thin.  […]

Anorexia and Bulimia: Beyond the Teen Scene

It’s almost a cliché - the teen with anorexia striving for the perfect body. But in our society, more and more older women (and men) are suffering from eating disorders.
In fact, I saw one older woman at the health club on Monday… she is getting smaller and working out harder. Her skin hangs loosely over […]

Anorexia, Bulimia, Depression, Prozac — what you should know

It’s been recognized that depression often goes hand-in-hand with eating disorders — I know in my case that was definitely true — so please be careful when medicating during recovery.  This includes “self-medicating”, such as taking over-the-counter herbal supplements.  You never know how your body will react to their ingredients, and it’s better to be […]

Mommies Less Likely to Have Eating Disorders?

Guess what? I have a great news story that’s perfect for Mother’s Day!
A recent Reuters article linked being a mom to fewer eating problems. Cool, huh?
As the article claims:
“Women have fewer eating problems after having children…largely because they stop drinking as much and behave less impulsively, according to new findings from Norway.”
Unfortunately, the piece does […]

Moms and Dads (and Spouses, Too): Start Reading the Pro-Ana Sites NOW

Please don’t be an ostrich if you’re a parent.
What’s an ostrich? It’s someone who sticks his or her head in the sand and pretends that things aren’t going on when they most definitely are.
This attitude is what allows so many eating disorders to go undetected by the people who live with anorexics and bulimics.
I recommend […]
