I’ve long known that eating disorders are associated with high mortality rates; however, it’s only in recent months that I’ve been able to understand exactly why.
You see, I always assumed that it was because anorexics starved themselves to death and bulimics purged their bodies to the point where a heart attack or stroke was inevitable.
But that’s […]

For men, it’s just not “cool” to have an eating disorder.
I mean, it’s not exactly hip for gals, either, but when you hear of a female with an ED, you are more apt to think, “Oh, I’m not surprised.”
But a guy… well, that’s just unusual.
According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), there are an […]

I’d like to develop a series of questions from anorexics and bulimics to people who have never had an eating disorder. Then, I’ll invite non-ED folks to tell us a little bit about what it’s like on “the other side.”
To start, I would love to know the answer to questions such as these (again, they […]

There’s no bulimic in the world who will tell you that bingeing and purging is a safe activity. Everyone seems to be well aware of the physical risks associated with such behavior.
But what about the fiscal problems that being bulimic bring?
From a purely economical standpoint, it can be extremely expensive to keep eating copious amounts […]

My husband and I joke about the way he vomits when he’s sick.
It’s almost unbelievable. The sounds emanating from our bathroom remind me of a dinosaur’s roar: “AHHHHHHHHHH!” I have to applaud him — and chuckle a little after he’s finished – because he gets it all out immediately and usually feels better very soon.
I, on […]

It’s something not every blogger wants to discuss, but I’m ready to tackle it:
s*&t.
Specifically, the inability to do this action.
When you don’t eat (or eat at strange times), your body loses its natural rhythm. After a while, elimination becomes sporadic or difficult.
I still deal with strange body function issues YEARS after having an active eating disorder […]

I just *love* it when people try to use logic to explain why individuals “shouldn’t” have eating disorders.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with citing fact after fact after fact after… well, you get what I mean. And I do understand from where they come.
But what many people don’t understand is that Ana and Mia operate […]

It’s my understanding that eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, once thought of as psychological disorders belonging to only “rich white girls” have now successfully crossed socioeconomic, race and age lines.
However, in our part of the country (central Pennsylvania), I have yet to meet anyone with an eating disorder who is not Caucasian. In fact, most of […]

I’ve met many gals who suffer from disordered eating (if not a full-blown ED such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia.) Many of them have terrible memories of their mothers. Some even blame their moms.
I can understand. I used to do that, too. But looking back with the eyes of a mommy, I can see what […]

Can a video game lead honestly trigger eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia?
Some people seem to think so, which flies in the face of typical criticisms of games generally aimed at keeping kids indoors for hours at a time.
Nintendo’s Wii Fit is the target of some unexpected controversy.
According to this news article from the […]
