The headlines don’t lie: The stage is ripe for eating disorders
Who can blame girls and women for obsessing over the shape of their bodies? Just take a gander at three of the weight-related news stories from the past week that I’ve listed below.
- Kate Beckinsale eats dessert (probably a poached pear…) This article by Popeater is an interview with Beckinsale who claims that she no longer starves herself. Hm. Not sure what to believe. She’s not stick-skinny, but she’s not meaty, either. I guess by Hollywood’s standards she’s a horse?
- The Dancing with the Stars “fat chicks” scandal has my blood boiling. Rumor has it that dancers Maksim Chmerkovsky and Louis van Amstel called dancers Lacey Schwimmer and Cheryl Burke overweight. See articles on this here and here and here. Now, it’s true that Cheryl and Lacey aren’t twigs, but HELLO! They are incredible dancers and obviously very successful. I don’t know what to think about Louis and Maksim (who is now saying he never made such comments.) All I can say is that my husband ADORES Cheryl and always has. He just shakes his head in disbelief at this kind of “weightism.”
- Are Vanity Fair pictures of Kate Winslet Photoshopped? She vehemently denies it, but my question is, “Why are you so crazed about this, Kate?” I mean, it’s obvious to me that NO ONE looks like this. I’m sorry, but take a gander at the photos, especially the one where she’s naked on fur. Does it look a little doctored to you? I’m not a Photoshop expert, but it seems to me that Kate should stop making a fuss about it. Kate used to be the actress who didn’t care about what the media said about her weight. I guess stardom has gotten to her.
This drives me nuts! I know that eating disorders are not necessarily about being skinny, but still… crap like this doesn’t help.

The Cheryl thing really makes me mad. shes a pofessional dancer- she dances, thats it- her weight has no baring on anything whatsoever.
and for a man to say something like that is just so LOW.

Kelly:
It says more about the guy than it does about Cheryl. My husband is disgusted by anyone suggesting that Cheryl is somehow inadequate.
Maybe Maksim and Louis wish they were women. ha ha ha!
