Recovery Musing #1

by angelique on October 7th, 2008

(This is the first in a series of musings.  The questions are meant to make you think — and sometimes there just aren’t any answers… at least not easy ones.  I’d love to hear your feedback on them.)

  • Would it scare you more to know that there’s a reason for everything or that everything happens by chance?

I think it would scare me more to know that there is a reason for everything…
For one, I can’t think of one reason why an ed would be given to someone…but more importantly…look at our world. It is so screwy.
I work in an inner city school with African American teenagers who live in poverty. They’ve never had the opportunity to be kids…they live terrible lives. I see the injustice that they face daily and I know that they are in pain…what could be the reason for that?
So i’d rather assume the universe is controlled by chance~my world or my mind is more settled that way:-)

I like the idea of things happening by chance although I’m not sure what I entirely believe. And I’m quite sure there’s a balance. Somethings will happen and it’s fate and then there’s also the ability to make things happen or change one’s own destiny.

But back to question. It would scare me to know that there is a reason for everything. Because there’s a lot of pain in this world and I know the reason surely is a lesson in forgiveness and strength and endurance but if it’s all just a test — well that seems pretty unfair.

But I don’t think these two things are mutually exclusive either. Certainly things can happen by chance — and then there can ultimately be a reason to explain it, if one is willing to search and explore within themselves to find the answer.

When tragic things happen, some people want to understand and some people will never be satisfied with an explanation or reason. I think it has a lot to do with faith, personality, and whether a person lives their own life, or just lets life happen to them.

And I’m speaking as someone who’s attempting to remove the shackles and live my own life and try to understand the reason in reasonable things and try not to get caught up in the injustices of the world.
