Your favorite binge food

by angelique on September 29th, 2008

I’m noticing that the poll at the sidebar is showing that plenty of readers are currently engaged in bulimic behavior.

Obviously, that’s not healthy.  But it’s not surprising, either; this is an eating disorder recovery community, after all!

Consequently, far be it from me to judge.  However, I do have a question for those who binge and purge (or simply binge):

  • What’s your binge food of choice?

If you feel that’s too sensitive an area to talk about, I understand.  But as a recovering/former anorexic, I have always been curious about bulimia.  Do you eat whatever you can?  Or do you tend to eat “forbidden” foods, like ice cream, pizza and chips?

    Cereal…strange right?
Also, I’ve never been a binger per se. I just recently looked into something called purging disorder which is similar to bulimia but lacks the binge part. In other words, any foods, even small amounts, are purged after eating.
It’s so new that it isn’t even considered a disagnosable ed yet. If this sounds familiar to anyone they should def. look into it.

I no longer binge or purge, but when I did, it was always for the simple carbohydrates - ice cream, cereal, cake….if it had tons of sugar, I was all about it.

Ice cream used to lead to a binge every time. And actually, cereal sometimes did too. High-fat or high-sugar foods are common triggers.

    Why cereal?

Gross and embarrassing but…if I knew(know) I was going to purge, cereal was an easy thing to get out. Eating alone gave me anxiety…eating and then not being able to get rid of it: well that was anxiety times 10.

Some of my favorite binge foods are:
    ice cream
    pizza
    cookies
    fried foods
    pastries
    cake

I don’t know but i’m sure there are more. I don’t know if i’d call them my binge foods though. Because over the past two years I’ve worked on integrating those foods into my regular meals so that I no longer binge out of control on them after the first bite.

It’s been very tricky however it paid off. I noticed that when I did binge, my binge eating episodes were much shorter since I allowed myself to have those foods anyways.

When I used to waitress I would have a waffle sundae (1/4 a big restaraunt waffle, ice cream, another 4th and more ice cream on top) from the one place I worked or a hot fudge cake sundae (a disgustingly chocolately hunk of a fudge cake heated with lotsa ice cream and fudge) and that was probably daily. Ice cream was just so simple.
And about the strictly purging thing…I think that was me. It’s been pretty well managed for the past year or so but I used to have to purge everything if I could. A single cookie…or a few tater tots at lunch at school. I was never a big binger but I got the flu once and I started letting things slide after I started getting better since I hadn’t kept anything down in 4 days and then I couldn’t stop eating like a normal teenager and purging took over…
