The “fastest” way to lose weight… and your life
A few days ago, I blogged about Woody Harrelson’s ridiculous desire to go to a deserted island and fast for 40 days.
(Yeah, good luck with that, dude.)
Anyway, a comment on the post that I received from a gal named Sherrie was so incredibly poignant that I just had to get a better view of her friend’s tragic experience with fasting.
My suggestion is that you read the Woody Harrelson post, check out her comment, then come back to hear more…

… the rest of Sherrie’s story …
(this is an email in response to my asking her for more information)
I’m replying to you immediately upon opening your message, since I feel it is that important. Thanks for taking the time to provide this crucial information to your readers.
The public needs to be made aware of how serious the consequences can be when one deprives one’s body (and therefore one’s brain) of nutrients. My friend’s mother tried the forty day fast. None of us are sure where she came up with the idea. Her children can’t ask her because she is now SEVERELY BRAIN DAMAGED. They think she read about this crazy idea somewhere, possibly even in the Bible, or maybe in a “Health Book.”
Talk about irony.
From what I know, she was fasting, and one day they found her collapsed in her home on the bathroom floor. She was rushed to the hospital, and she NEVER recovered. When I spoke to doctors and nurses who took care of her, they said it was due to vitamin deprivation to the brain. The name of the condition is “Wernicker-Korsakoff” syndrome. She now is in a nursing home, is barely able to interact with her surroundings, and needs constant supervision.
Angelique, it is a nightmare, both for this woman, and for her family.
We live in Toronto, Canada. This all happened within the past year. By the way, I used to “compete” with this woman, (friendly competition), to see who could finish Sudoku puzzles first. She beat me every time.
Sherrie
If this doesn’t move you to think twice before going on an “innocent” fast, I guess nothing will.
Thank you again, Sherrie. I can’t tell you how many lives you may have saved.

its awfully devastating, the way we put ourselves in such dangerous situations, not having an idea of how big the damage might be.
i think lack of information is a bit to blame…this post can really make a difference in more than one.
when i was ip i collapsed and had seizures, the doctors said it was due to vitamin B complex deprivation, and that was the way my brain reacted.
here i am today, i guess i was pretty damn lucky…and i am SO thankful, im NEVER going back again

Mon:
I agree — I never knew that fasting could end up in serious brain damage.
Of course, it makes sense. But when you’re anorexic/bulimic, you’re not usually thinking logically.
I’m so glad you’re in recovery! Hurray!
