Is anyone to “blame” for your eating disorder?

by angelique on June 2nd, 2008

There’s a good discussion thread happening in the comments of my post about whether moms are to be blamed for their daughters’ (and/or sons’) romps with Ana and Mia.

Please chime in with your thoughts on this subject!

I want to see where we can take this conversation…

(Oh, and I’ll be asking about dads soon, too…)

I don’t think any one person is to blame. I think culture has affected me… and mean comments from peers even from a young age has affected me, and comments from first loves…

But no matter what I feel most at blame. I’m the one that ultimately puts the food or pills in my body and take my butt to the gym. I may not have seen it coming but I do feel at fault.

There are some days that I blame myself. I punish myself for doing this…

And then there are days when I know I can point the finger at my mom, my dad, and society.

But in the end…what does it do? Okay, great it’s my mom and dad’s fault. Now what? Are they going to fix it? Nope. Because they can’t. It’s my responsibility and so while in fits of rage it’s nice to have that finger to point at them, it does nothing for my recovery.
