(sarcastic) Newsflash: Ana’s not logical!

by angelique on June 1st, 2008

I just *love* it when people try to use logic to explain why individuals “shouldn’t” have eating disorders.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with citing fact after fact after fact after… well, you get what I mean.  And I do understand from where they come.

But what many people don’t understand is that Ana and Mia operate emotionally.  That’s one of the things that makes them so insidious.

Case in point:  I’m an educated woman in her mid-30s.  I have a career, a family and an active life.  I know all the stats about eating disorders (or many of them, anyway).  I realize how terrible anorexia and bulimia are both physicially and psychologically.

But there are still many, many, many days when I fight myself to not slide into the world of disordered eating.

This has nothing to do with logic and everything to do with the psychology of my emotions, experiences, obsessions, fears, et cetera.

No, it doesn’t make sense.  I realize that.

However, I think it’s critical that anyone attempting to help someone with an ED accept that facts and figures will not get to the crux of the problem.

I have had many conversations with myself about how stupid I am for having an ED. Like you said, I know the facts…but it doesn’t help
