Ana’s ticked… a regular-looking gal won ANTM
Just found out that Whitney, a so-called “plus-size” model, won America’s Next Top Model, cycle 10.
The comments flying around the Internet are across the board, from thrilled to incensed.
One person thought Whitney looked like a “sausage” stuffed into her clothes. Another was proud that a regular-looking gal one. Still others are certain the whole thing is rigged by Tyra and her cohorts and that it was “time” for a “fat” girl to make the grade.
I actually do not watch the show. But I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Whoa! Where the hell have I been? I actually caught up on the entire season (well it was between Whitney, Fatimah, and the other girl who had an accent and for the life of me I cannot remember her name). Regardless, I was a bit puzzled as to who would in the title. For starters, there has never been a plus size ANTM before. Although technically, I would NEVER EVER consider her plus sized. She looks like a completely normal girl and I thought she was very pretty. Top Model? Well, none of them ever really become TOP models, but kudos to her if she breaks the trend.
My friends and I were watching the marathon on VH1 and we all had our favorites. I absolutely loved Fatimah but she’s not American. Yeah, I know. I’m horrible for even saying that. But technically, she’s not a citizen so it didn’t make sense in my (a teeny bit closed minded mind) for her to be ANTM. The only problem with that is that (oh wait, the other girl’s name came to me! Anya!) well, none of the model’s ever really “make” it. And I guess now looking back on it, the winner doesn’t have to be AMERICAN but it just really bothered me for like four episodes that Fatimah AND Anya (not sure of her citizenship status) were still in the running. And I absolutely adored Anya (but she struggled immensely with English). I haven’t heard much from the future ANTM winners but some of them have gone on to do commercials and I just couldn’t imagine her doing cover girl.
Do we see how absolutely critical I am? Yeah. Not good. Either way….I’m overjoyed that Whitney won. All in all, the remaining three were the BEST of the bunch (although there was another girl who booked every single Go See but she was cut for one bad picture). Whitney’s attractive and sexy but the only thing that stands out about her IS the fact that she’s not a size 2. Will that be enough to get her on the runway when most fashion designers aren’t interested in size 8’s? Not sure. If the point of this reality series is to really give these girls leverage into making it into a successful modeling career, then I’m not sure they’re really living up to their name in the end. And let’s say that on the off chance that this wasn’t rigged by Tyra to FINALLY have a girl who’s pants size resembles more of what American women truly wear, it’s not really fair to make her a poster child for plus sized models in a high couture industry because she’ll never get the work she wants. It’s a hard bullet to bite, but painfully true. There were a few designers that said they might be interested in Whitney’s “look” but most of them made it very clear that although she was very pretty, she doesn’t have the look for their clothes.
Hopefully this will be the beginning of a beautiful thing. More plus sized models making the first round of cuts for the show and a real chance to show beauty and fashion of all sizes. I’m just really glad that Whitney was able to FIT some of the clothes for her Go See’s and the fashion shows. Let’s not forget three years back when the first plus size model was given a size two to squeeze into and completely humiliated and ridiculed on international television. Even a model (who should theoretically have a positive self image) can lose hope when she’s completely bombarded with images of what’s sexy and what’s hot and what a model should look like…and those images look nothing like her.

Well well well… let me start by saying that Whitney is extraordinary. Her features, from her eyes to her figure, are amazing. I am a devoted fan of ANTM since I was in 7th grade. I watch reruns all the time on MTV. (Although it has ben recently replaced with “So You Think You Can Dance.”) I do not understand what is the big deal about Whitney winning (the bad stuff!) She had the best pictures… ok, Anya had the best pics, but she proved she didn’t know how to take direction worth a pickle.) I do not think Tyra rigged the show. I really don’t. Think about it. The past “Plus Size” models have been diva-licious coming in, but they fade away. They loose confidence in themselves. Whitney never did that.
Whitney has all the qualities a Top Model should have, and she worked that runway. She was gorgeous and she commanded attention. OK, so she looks “normal.” So what if she doesn’t look almost-alien-like??? It doesn’t matter! She is not, as I have heard most people say, “A girl they could’ve found in a mall.” She is not! If she was, she wouldn’t be America’s Next Top Model. Whitney is an awesome person. People should support instead of hate on her.
