Of Rants, Pants and Dance

by angelique on May 14th, 2008

I have the opportunity to look at many eating disorder and body image related websites every day. Sometimes, one is so bizarre that it catches my attention and sticks in my head.

This post, Why Photoshop is a Feminist’s Best Friend, by author Julie Burchill is one of the strangest articles I’ve seen.

In fact, I’m not certain I can fully describe her rant (you’ll have to read it yourself), though I must say I was both nodding in agreement at some of her assertions and violently shaking my head at others, including this nugget:

“But these new ones … portray women as neurotic, looks-obsessed cretins who are likely to collapse in a weeping heap of jelly if they come across proof that any other woman is better-looking than they are. If you do exist, ladies - grow up, or kill yourself, or something! But don’t kid yourself that all broads are as tragically low in self-respect as you are, and don’t hand this absolute gift to the sort of creepy man who soothes his sad soul by imagining that every woman between the ages of 16 and 61 lives in a permanent self-loathing state of competition with every other woman on the planet. Personally, I love good-looking women - it gives a girl something to perve over if there are no good-looking men around.”

Um. I am appalled. I’m certain that Burchill is being tongue-in-cheek, but her callous words really sting.

On an unrelated topic, I hate buying pants. No matter where I get them, they always look stupid and horrid and weird.

Jeans are the worst. The absolutely WORST. I rarely can find one that fits my 5′3.5″ frame. Any suggestions?

Finally, I’d like to voice my concerns about the way Broadway actress Marissa Jaret Winokur has been treated on the popular U.S. reality show Dancing with the Stars. If I hear her defined again by her weight, I’m going to scream.

Really, her size shouldn’t even be an issue. Who cares that she’s “not a size zero”? The fact is that the lady is a bubbly gal full of positivity and personality. Of course, that doesn’t mean she should have stayed on as long as she did - her dancing was… well… not so great. But again, I think that people voted for her BECAUSE she’s not the “ideal” body image.

Give me a break. That’s insulting.

About the pants - I am 5′5″, but have a longer torso and shorter legs, and I find a lot of clothes at thrift stores that carry mainly juniors sizes. Some of the older juniors pants/jeans seem to have a shorter inseam - say 30-31″ or so. It seems that now if you go to the mall the pants are very long. Especially at stores like Guess or department stores. Hope that helps.

That’s a really good idea. I never thought of it, to be perfectly honest.

I know I could just get my jeans tailored, but I honestly have little to no time to even get to a tailor, let alone shop for jeans. :)
