Ana makes a stop to schools “Down Under”

by angelique on May 3rd, 2008

Ana is like a rock star.  Really.  Some days, it seems like she’s everywhere.

She’s even made it to Australia, where a recent news article from ABCNews (that’s the Australian Broadcasting Corporation for all you Americans who are accustomed to “ABC” referring to a different organization) says that school programs in the land Down Under are need to talk in a more informative (and accurate) about eating disorders.

Says the article, dated today:

Danni Watts suffered from anorexia for many years and says what she was taught at school just never seemed to apply to her.

“Probably my first experience was in Year 11 PE [physical education] that I remember talking about eating disorders… Looking back, I remember it being very clinical, and obviously having experienced one and looking at what I was taught, it was completely inaccurate.”

The story also mentions this statistic:

A study released by Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital this week found one in 10 girls aged 15 to 17 showed signs of a serious eating disorder.

That’s a whopping 10% of tweens and early teens.  I don’t know if it’s to be taken with a grain of salt or not, but regardless, it’s high.

Ironically, I once had a brief friendship (brief because she traveled so heavily, not because we had any bad experiences with one another) with a wonderful gal from Perth (western Australia.)  By American standards, she was a little “thick”, but never saw herself as anything other than… well… herself

Ana couldn’t get to this lass no matter how hard she tried.  Being around my buddy was refreshing.

Speaking of Ana, I wonder where her “world tour” will land her next…?
