An Ana-Related Poem

by angelique on March 24th, 2008

I haven’t written any poetry for a little while, and was inspired today to pen my thoughts about Ana, the mythical “friend” to anorexics (and those suffering from EDNOS and bulimia, too, in some cases.)

I must alert you that this poem is quite rough.  It’s actually kind of lousy.  So I’d like to request your help in cleaning it up.  Please feel free to add your own stanzas (or change mine) in the comments section.  Be gentle, but honest.  I can take it…  :)

UNTITLED

Ana called me in for tea -
She said she had to talk to me.

Her room was shiny, very bright.
Mirrors echoed beams of light.

Scales were placed around the floor
Step off of one and onto more.

Ana’s body was pure and thin
Bones poked through her creamy skin.

I asked her how to look like she…
She told me it was quite easy.

“Don’t eat the food,” she smiled and said.
“It makes you fat and round and dead.”

I gulped and held back tears of pain.
The road ahead was clear - restrain.

And so I took that thorny path.
I starved until I couldn’t laugh.

I starved until I couldn’t weep.
I starved until I couldn’t sleep.

And Ana stayed right by my side.
I thought she was my friend - she lied.

She told me I was worthless, crude.
She said I did not deserve food.

Yet as she turned from sweet to cold
I still believed all I was told.

And then one day I told her, “No.”
I took her by the wrist, said, “Go!”

It wasn’t simple, wasn’t fun.
I felt alone, wanted to run.

But after we had parted ways
I found myself enjoying days.

I was free, shackled no more.
Yet Ana lurks around each door.

I know she’s there, I hear her call…
I smell her perfume in the hall.

Beware of Ana’s siren song.
She’s out to string us all along.
