Drunkorexia?
The popular site Salon.com had an interesting article on a condition I had never heard mentioned before: “drunkorexia.”
In the piece, author Tracy Clark-Flory notes:
“The New York Times reports that drunkorexia is ‘a disturbing blend of behaviors: self-imposed starvation or bingeing and purging, combined with alcohol abuse.’“
I had never heard of this “-orexia” before, and though it’s not an accepted term by medical standards, it does make one think.
If you’re intrigued, the full article can be found here: http://www.salon.com/mwt/broadsheet/2008/03/03/drunkorexia/. It’s worth a read.
(Susan, thanks for turning me on to this tidbit!)

Wow. I am VERY intrigued by the idea, but do agree with the original author in the fact that it could be lessening the social stigma of eating disorders by applying names like these to them. Thank you for sharing the info with us, I may have to do a little more research now!

I’m with you. And after doing more research, I had to write my next post on “manorexia”. Seems these -orexias never end!
Thanks for stopping by!
