Let’s be honest, folks
Like most sites devoted to educating visitors on the horrors of eating disorders, Breaking the Mirror devotes plenty of time to giving you, the audience, information, statistics and all sorts of data. That’s well and good.
But the truth is that those of us who are trying to combat the spread of EDs have no idea how to once and for all tackle the beast.
See, what works with one patient won’t with another. Even though two 18-year-old anorexics both restrict their foods, their impetusus for doing so could vary widely. Thus, prevention and intervention become “sticky wickets”.
And let’s be honest about something — many people could easily fall into the trap of eating disorders based on little more than, say, an industry like high fashion modeling or acting:
- “Honey, if you lose 20 pounds, you’ll be making six figures in a year.” (To a 16-year-old, what’s 20 pounds? If she makes $100,000 annually, that’s $5K a pound! Sounds good to me, and I know what’s wrong with the picture!)
- “Babe, I know you’re only in your early thirties, but if you don’t diet and get some plastic surgery, your career is going to dry up. At least if you go under the knife and keep your weight down you’ll have a little longer on screen.” (Another couple years of making buckets of money versus having to get a job in another field? Can you blame the people who sign up for this deal?)
In the end, I don’t have the answers. But maybe you do. And this is YOUR forum, more so than mine. My challenge to you is how the heck can we start bringing down this monster before it begins to infiltrate another generation of teens and tweens?
