The Sticks and Stones Project, part i

by angelique on February 22nd, 2008

Uber-blogger (and incredibly creative gal) Gabrielle from Fertility Notes and I have decided to conduct a little project we’re calling “Sticks and Stones”.

Over the next few days, we’re each going to offer videos depicting our least favorite things that people say to us.  (FYI — Gab is the actress for Breaking the Mirror vids, I am the actress for the Fertility Notes counterparts.)

Some of the statements you’ll see are undeniably insensitive and/or rude, others are just the result of people not understanding fertility issues or eating disorders.

We need you to let us know what you’d say in response to each remark!

Even if you’ve never dealt with infertility or EDs, imagine what you’d say.  Give us all you’ve got — we have thick skins!  (I promise!)  Say what you wish you had the guts to… or let us know how you’d actually respond.

Here is the first “Sticks and Stones” installation…

What would your answer be if someone said this to you…?

*breaks out into a funky-ass dance* “No, I’m doing *this* for attention.” *keeps dancing*

I actually did that once … it broke the tension and allowed the accuser and I to actually TALK about my eating disorder.

What a great response, and a very positive way to open the subject for discussion. I applaud you on your innovative method of dealing with this type of comment!

You know what? I can’t think of a response! I instantly got defensive watching the video, but I couldn’t think of what I would actually *say* if someone said that to me.

    Katie:

That’s fascinating, isn’t it? Even though you know that it’s just an actress saying the words, they still upset you. Wow. Sticks and stones indeed, huh?
