Another ED-related “PostSecret”

by angelique on February 3rd, 2008

As I mentioned a few posts back, I love checking out the PostSecret website on Sundays.  It’s definitely a guilty pleasure.

Today’s first postcard is yet another related to body image.  On the paper, there is a drawing of the side view a naked, ematiated woman.  The handwritten “secret” says “I am happier when I am hungry.”

Interesting.

To my eyes, the statement doesn’t “jive” with the drawing.  What I see is a very uncomfortable, sad silhouette, not a gal who is jumping for joy because she’s skinny.  I find it intriguing that the “secret writer” chose such a picture (or perhaps created it herself) as an illustration.

I’d love to know whether you see the same disconnect between the words and the image.  Am I just interpreting the picture through my own views on EDs?  Or is there more to this posted secret than meets the eye?

As a recovering sufferer I understand what this sender is saying. When you feel the hunger pulling at you, you feel like you have succeeded. Depression sets in if you give into the feeling of hunger and eat. In her eyes, eating is failure so she is happier because Hunger is victory. Probably doesn’t make sense. I tried. Also, notice the bones outlined in the picture.
