Resolutions, weight loss, and EDs
It’s that time of the year again… New Year’s Resolutions are everywhere.
Generally speaking, I think it’s fabulous to make plans for the coming 12 months. I typically do it, and I usually stick with most (if not all) of them. Of course, I make my resolutions measurable and reasonable, so that helps.
However, weight loss has never found its way onto my resolutions page. Even when I was anorexic, it never occurred to me to “resolve” to be thinner; it was simply something I assumed I’d do anyway.
But that’s me. Or it was me, I should say.
After perusing tons of “Thinspiration” and “Pro Ana/Mia” sites, I’m very concerned that weight loss is going to be a resolution for numerous already-too-thin men and women in the world. And I don’t think all the ads for Alli, Weight Watchers, and LA Fitness are going to help.
Therefore, I’d like to suggest something a tad different for anyone leaning in the ED direction who wishes to compile a list of new year’s resolutions.
Instead of trying to lose weight, why not make a serious attempt to gain health this year?
Make it a priority to be healthier than ever before in 2008. That doesn’t mean you have to pack on the pounds (even if you probably should); but it does me that you have to be willing to feed yourself so that your muscles have fuel (and don’t begin chomping on themselves.)
Imagine how strong you’ll feel inside and out if you can allow yourself to let go of the scale and instead work toward being a strong person, inside and out.
And if you want some inspiration (and not thinspiration), hop on over to Ruth’s blog, Eating Fabulous or Jul’s place, Veggic Chic. For some other truly awesome ideas, Kristen King has suggestions for your well-being at Lively Women.
Good luck to you! Let’s make 2008 a year to remember for all the right reasons!
