Not-so-fine young “cannibals”
In my day-to-day life, I occasionally have the chance to talk with young women about nutrition and body image.
One of the last times I was given this type of opportunity, I used it to try a new tactic. Instead of talking about the usual “why you shouldn’t become anorexic/bulimic” stuff, I told them point blank that if they starved themselves, their bodies would be forced to eat themselves.
You should have seen their faces as I described this kind of self-cannibalism.
Believe me, it was powerful. I made it sound pretty grisly.
(To be perfectly honest, I was probably a little too dramatic in the process. But it seemed to resonate with my listeners.)
Of course, I have no idea if this type of preventive measure will work in the long run, but for a few moments, I think I finally “got” to some young gals.
I hope.
